How do animal shelters, humane societies, and overpopulation affect our society?

I am doing a report on humane societies and animal shelters for high school and i wanted/need to know how they affect the society that we live in. I was kinda focusing mainly on euthanasia and pet overpopulation. Thank you for your help!
